Linda Philips - Independent Speech and Language Therapist

Hi, my name is Linda and I’m here to help develop communication, emotional management and the ability to relate effectively to people. I’m passionate about sharing my expertise to enable you, or someone you know, to function effectively in social settings.

After qualifying with a BSc Logopaedics at the University of Cape Town (South Africa) in 1990, I worked for four years at Groote Schuur Hospital, famed for being the first hospital to perform a heart transplant. I then moved to the UK where my interest in the field of Autism was initially sparked. Over the years, I've had the privilege of learning from many autistic people as well as talented colleagues providing diagnostic opinions, assessments and interventions. In 2008, I obtained a Masters Degree in Human Communication at City University in London.

I strongly believe that good social and communication skills are a fundamental part of our well-being and ability to participate effectively in all areas of life. Research repeatedly shows that these skills matter. They are highly related to satisfaction in relationships as well as success in school and work (*see articles below for more detail).

Given that the core difficulties of Autism/ ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder) are problems with social communication, interaction and emotional understanding, guidance in these areas should be offered as a matter of course. Unfortunately, widespread budget cuts have resulted in reduced services being offered in many areas of the UK.

Thankfully however, internet access allows us to overcome our geographical barriers and also helps us to find solutions to our problems. In addition to clinic based appointments, Autism Routemap is offering Skype appointments for adults and will soon be providing online social skills training packages. The online training option means that you no longer need to travel to clinics for appointments that don’t fit with your schedule or location. Instead, you can access support from the comfort of your own home at a time to suit you.
